The years 2019 and 2020 mark the 30th anniversaries of the events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall (also known as the peaceful revolution) and German reunification. In commemoration of these events, the Federal Government is organizing celebrations throughout the country aimed at bringing people together.
To this end, the Commission on the 30th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German Reunification was established in April 2019 by Cabinet decision. It is chaired by former Minister-President of the State of Brandenburg Matthias Platzeck. Its mission is to reflect critically on the transformation and reunification process to date, to draw lessons for the future course of German unity, and to create relevant recommendations for action.
The Commission also puts forward suggestions for planning the anniversary, which has three main goals:
Engaging in dialogues – Commemorating milestones – Sharing knowledge
