The Federal Government would like to celebrate the 30th anniversaries of the peaceful revolution and German reunification as unifying anniversaries for all of Germany. These celebrations are also intended to raise awareness that German unity is a process that is still ongoing.
To do this, the Federal Government has convened the Commission on the 30th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German Reunification. The Commission has 22 members and is chaired by former Minister-President of Brandenburg Matthias Platzeck. The deputy chair of the Commission is Marco Wanderwitz, Member of the German Bundestag, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States.
The Commission was appointed in April 2019 and holds regular workshops and meetings. It issues recommendations for organizing the anniversary year.
A steering group headed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community makes the final decisions on the recommendations of the Commission and the Office for the 30th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German Reunification.
It is composed of the Commission chairs along with representatives of the Federal Chancellery; the Federal Ministry of Finance; the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth; and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
The Office for the 30th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German Reunification has been established at the Federal Ministry of the Interior to carry out the anniversary celebrations.
