MATTHIAS PLATZECK, FORMER MINISTER-PRESIDENT OF THE STATE OF BRANDENBURG
Born in Potsdam in 1953
From 1990 to 1998, Matthias Platzeck served as the Minister for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment of the state of Brandenburg. From 1998 onwards he was mayor of Potsdam, until he succeeded Manfred Stolpe as Minister-President of the state of Brandenburg in 2002. He remained in office until 2013. He joined the SPD in 1995 and served as chair of the Brandenburg SPD from 2000 to 2013. He co-chaired the commission reviewing the funding of the nuclear energy phase-out and was a member of the commission addressing growth, cultural change and employment. He has chaired the German-Russian Forum since 2014.
