Press release – 3 August 2020

Open call for works of art – the Commission on the 30th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German Unity invites the public to contribute to the art project Galerie der Einheit

Artistic works can be submitted between 3 August and 30 September.

For the 30th Day of German Unity, which will be celebrated in the form of the EinheitsEXPO in Potsdam, the Commission on the 30th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and German Unity will launch the Galerie der Einheit (Gallery of Unity). This growing and constantly changing art installation will be on display on Luisenplatz at the heart of Potsdam from 5 September to 4 October 2020 and will be accompanied by an online exhibition.

From 3 August to 30 September, the public is invited to contribute their own works dedicated to the theme “Deutschland ist eins: vieles” (Germany: coming together as one). These contributions can be submitted in an analogue, digital or digitalised form. For more detailed information: https://deutschland-ist-eins-vieles.art

During the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of German Unity, the public’s artworks will be displayed on the outside of a white cube installed on the square, joining together to form a larger mosaic-like piece of art that will change every day.

Dr Maria Nooke, Commissioner for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship of the state of Brandenburg and member of the Commission, said: “The installation is to portray the many facets of Germany’s development during the last 30 years. When on 3 October we celebrate German unity brought about by the peaceful revolution, we also wish to pay tribute to all those who, through their courage and effort, made this unity possible and shaped it. This art project will provide the space to give individual creative expression to many different ideas, perspectives and perceptions and join them into one big piece of art.”

As of 5 September, all artworks submitted will also be put on display in a virtual exhibition online, to which newly submitted contributions will constantly be added.

Dr Judith Enders, co-founder of the initiative Dritte Generation Ostdeutschland (Third-generation eastern Germany) and member of the Commission, stated: “Whether physically on Luisenplatz in Potsdam or in the virtual museum – it is important that as many people as possible have the chance to participate in these special celebrations on the 30th anniversary of German unity. We hope that this invitation will reach many people and inspire them to give artistic and creative expression to the anniversary year’s motto, Deutschland ist eins: vieles (Germany: coming together as one).”

In addition to the artworks by the public decorating the outside of the white cube, ten artists or groups of artists selected by a jury will design its interior for 3 days each. Artists can submit their ideas relating to the theme “30 years of German Unity – 3 x 10: Reimagining our Future” until 9 August.
